Seafood Hut “Best Seafood”

July 1, 2010 by gary

lCoastal Living Magazine has chosen Calabash Seafood Hut having the best seafood on the East Coast in this month’s magazine.

By most standards the Calabash Seafood Hut is a tiny restaurant—it can only seat about 65 people in the dining area but customers have been happy to wait patiently in line outside because they know it’s worth the wait!
A part of Calabash history, the Calabash Seafood Hut was opened  by local Virgil Coleman back in 1961. Back then it went by the name “Calabash Drive-in,” There they served up hamburgers and seafood at the curbside.
These days the restaurant remains in the same family’s hands. Sisters Marilyn Howarth and Gail Russ, Coleman’s daughters, run the restaurant. But the family says they have no plans to expand stating that it would be the same if they did.
For years many newspapers and magazines have sung the praises of the Calabash Seafood Hut for both its food and and great service.
Coastal Living Magazine recently named it “Best Pick on the East Coast for its shrimp, scallop, fish and clam chowder”.
While in the area be sure not to miss this favorite of locals and visitors alike!

If all goes as planned the Town of Calabash, NC will soon have its first park! The has been awarded a $56,700 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant to build the park.

The Mayor, Anthony Clemmons announced the grant at the May monthly town commissioners meeting.

The park site selected is a vacant 1-acre lot, owned by the town located across from the Calabash Town Hall at the corner of Persimmon Road and Traders Lane.
The grant money was secured with the help of the Cape Fear Council Governments in Wilmington and Calabash town administrator Marzy Marziano, Clemmons said.

Mayor Clemmons stated that there are still a couple of steps left to go – a contract will be sent to the Town, the board will need to review it, send it back and then “we’ll be on our way to building the park next door.”

Detailed park drawings were on display at the meeting created by local developer Scott Stewart in conjunction with his architects.

Clemmons said “Scott saved us a couple thousand or more, and he will continue to support us in our efforts” .

Town commissioner Forrest King proposed the possibility of donating proceeds from a car show toward funding.

Clemmons said the town would be instituting a program involving presentation of the park diagram and requests for support.
